The Influence of Music on the Identity Development of a Student of a Lower Secondary School

The diploma thesis aims to describe the influence of music on the identity development of a student at a lower secondary school. The thesis is divided into two main parts. The theoretical part describes the term identity and musical identity and its development in adolescence. Also, it includes the description of Music education in the Czech Republic with focus on the lower secondary schools. It is concluded with the portrayal of a personality of a teacher in general, and the personality of a Music teacher. The core part of the thesis is the empiric part, which is focused on the influence of music on identity development in adolescence. It surveys the musical preferences of the pupils, the influence of a Music teacher, and the pupils' relationship to music. The participants of the research were 472 pupils of lower secondary schools in three regions of the Czech Republic. It was proved that musical preferences are not influenced by peers but rather social media; also, musical preferences are not conditioned by music education level. Furthermore, it was confirmed that music helps pupils deal with their problems and regulate their emotions.
